In 2007 Liverpool celebrates its 800th birthday.

This is the anniversary of when, in 1207, King John granted Liverpool its first charter.

King John's charter came about because he needed a suitable port from which to launch expeditions to Ireland and Wales.

He obtained Liverpool from Henry Fitzwarin and enticed settlers by offering them attractive inducements such as land and immunity from taxes.

This persuaded many people to move to the new community, converting what had been solely a small farming and fishing hamlet into a prosperous town.

As 2007 ends, another chapter begins as Liverpool becomes European Capital of Culture.
